When does actual life get replaced by virtual life

The series Black Mirror depicts the lives of a girl in her early adulthood just trying to make a living for herself. Unfortunately, she lives in a world where social media dictates all and virtuality is essentially how you survive. Your popularity levels in real life are based on your star level and if you are liked by all you're likely to be in the 4-5 star region, now if you are not popular and or genuine your rates may do down to even as low as 1 and well thats worse than anything in this world. The first episode nosedive sets the stage for the series, we see the main characters life take a turn for the absolute worst. She is literally nosediving all the way down to the ground. By this I mean that she starts off at a high rate, people like her, she's friendly and has great potential. Slowly, the rating scale takes over her life and soon she is doing irrational things simply to create a facade about her life when the reality of it all is that her life is in actual shambles. Overall, the episode was great and extremely informational. Black Mirror is a great series and definitely highlights some aspects of social media that shouldn't totally be ruled out in the world we live in.

The amount of harm a photo sharing app actually has

Privacy in social media is an outstanding issue in modern day society. Top newspaper companies such as NY Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal all have numerous articles involving this topic. The reason as to why this is an issue is because of safety issues. The algorithms used for these social media sites can be so misleading and through a matter of clicks you can end up on a completely different post, video, and or tweet. Even though social media is making its way into our day to day society that does not mean that we are still as safe and secure as we were maybe a decade or so ago. According to New York Times, "The primary problem with today’s social networks is that they’re already too big, and are trapped inside a market-based system that forces them to keep growing" (Roose,2018). What this means is that societies no matter how much they would like to keep the public safe it is simply inevitable and the slowing down of social media is very unlikely to happen. One website that is particularly dangerous is Instagram  Now it may seem that Instagram is just a social media site to upload your best pictures, funniest videos, and maybe even a meme every now and again. Yet, as of late Instagram has started promoting all sorts of companies. They range from clothing, food, advertisements  and pretty much anything the public eye would want to see. Yet, on every account there are different sponsored ads that appear. It is often joked around about these ads that are popping up on your screen are modified and specially picked based on either your past instagram searches, something you may have liked or commented on. The moral behind this is that individuals are feeling strange because instagram is coming up with sponsered ads that you know have applied to you lately. This leads to the issue of privacy and safety. Is instagram really just harmless or is the site simply a tactic to obtain peoples personal information to try and manipulate what ads they see? All in all, all social media sites are used by the public and all are eliminating the essence of privacy in any individuals life.
